أسعد خليل داغر (1277 هـ - 1354 هـ / 1860 - 1935م)
ولد في بلدة كفر شيما (لبنان) وتوفي في القاهرة، عاش في لبنان، واللاذقية (سورية) ومصر والسودان. تلقى تعليمه في مدرسة عبية العالية، والكلية الأمريكية في بيروت. اشتغل مدرساً في اللاذقية سنوات عديدة، ثم ذهب إلى مصر ليشغل وظيفة رئيس القلم القضائي في وكالة حكومة السودان. يعد من كبار النقلة والمترجمين في هذه الحقبة، ونشر مقالاته العلمية والاجتماعية في المجلات الكبرى كالهلال والمقتطف. اشتهر بتدقيقه اللغوي.
الأعمال الأخرى
- له ثلاثة دواوين ذات خصوصية: «فاجعة الفواجع»: مجموعة قصائد في رثاء نسيبة بركات - مصر 1895ديوان «تاريخ الحرب الكبرى شعراً» - مطبعة الهلال - مصر 1919. (يتألف من 36 قصيدة، تحتوي على 1500 بيت تقريباً)، و«نشر النَدّ العطر»: مجموعة قصائد في رثاء نعوم شقير - القاهرة.

يستعرض المؤلف في هذا الكتاب مذكراته خلال مرحلة تزيد على نصف قرن من الزمن، رافق خلالها تطورات القضية العربية، منذ تأسيس أول المنتديات في اسطنبول حيث كان يتابع الدراسة بعد إعلان الدستور العثماني عام 1908، مرورًا بالقاهرة التي بدأ فيها ممارسة الصحافة، إلى المشاركة في النشاط السياسي في دمشق إثر قيام الحكومة العربية (1918-1920) إلى متابعته كافة الأنشطة السياسية العربية على امتداد العشرينيات وحتى نهاية الخمسينيات من القرن العشرين. ويشتمل الكتاب على الكثير من الوقائع والأحداث التي كان المؤلف شاهدًا عليها والتي سجلها بكل موضوعية ونزعة نقدية ميزت كل فصول الكتاب.
