لما كان الشعر هو أبرز ما احتج به من كلام العرب فى تقرير التحديدات والضوابط اللغوية فى مستويات الدرس اللغوى-الأصوات, والصيغ, والتركيب ومتن اللغة والدلالة, فقد قصرت البحث فى مدى الالتزام بنطق الاحتجاج عليه, هذا مع العلم بأن ما يصدق على الشعر قد يصدق على غيره من كلام العرب فى هذا المجال.
وقد اقتضى تأصيل الدراسة -ببيان وجه الحاجة إلى الشواهد فى تقرير الأحكام اللغوية- أن نقف عند موضوع السليقة اللغوية, لأنها أحد الأسس المهمة لكون الاستشهاد اللغوى ضروريا, وقد أطلنا تلك الوقفة, لأن السليقة اللغوية هذه صارت موضع جحد عند المحدثين.
ومن هنا فقد رتبت الكتاب على الأبواب التالية: الباب الأول: السليقة اللغوية, أما الباب الثانى: الشاهد ومعنى الاستشهاد. ولما كان الهدف من الشواهد اللغوية هو إثبات أن الجزئية اللغوية المستشهد لها عربية حقيقية, فقد عقدت الباب الثالث: لبيان "معيار عروبة الكلام" التى تجعله موضعا للاحتجاج به, وتفصيل النطق التى ضربت لضمان عروبته هذه: من قبلية, ومكانية, وزمانية, ومشتركة.
وأما الباب الرابع: فقد عقدته لبيان "أثر نطق الاحتجاج" ثم مناقشتها وقدمت -لبيان الأثر- صورة عامة, وأخرى تفصيلية واقعية لالتزام اللغويين فى مؤلفاتهم بنطق الاحتجاج.
وأما الأبواب الخامس والسادس والسابع فقد عقدتها لعرض ما وقع من الأئمة اللغويين من تجاوز -فى احتجاجاتهم اللغوية- لنطق الاحتجاج إحساسا منهم بما شاب نطق الاحتجاج -من ناحية, واعترافا منهم بضرورة النمو والتطور للغة- من جانب آخر.
وأما الباب الثامن والأخير "تحقيق واستخلاص" فقد خصصت الفصل الأول منه لمواجهة كل الشبهات التى قد تثار حول كون تلك الاحتجاجات بشعر المولدين هى احتجاجات حقيقية فعلا, وأنها تمثل نسبة ذات اعتبار.
وأخيرا خصصت الفصل الثانى لاستخلاص دلالة الاحتجاجات الكثيرة بشعر المولدين, وهى أنه مادام قد تم وضع قواعد اللغة وأصولها ومقاييسها أخذا من نتاج عصر الفصاحة السليقية, فإن قبول ما يستجد فى اللغة بعد ذلك ينبغى أن يناط باتساقه مع تلك الأصول والمقاييس- مع الثقة فى فصاحة قائله, وذلك بصرف النظر عن كونه من المولدين.
