يقدم المرصفى في "رسالة الكلم الثمان" تحليلاً للواقع المصرى ينطبق في حقيقة الأمر على مجتمعات أخرى مشابهة من عربية وإسلامية. وهذا التحليل الذى يقدمه للواقع ينطلق من حقائق الأمور: الفقر الشديد، والإرهاق الذى لحق بأوسع الفئات وتسلط المتنفزين. وجهل ونفاق رجال الدين، فيعرض لنا تقريراً عن واقع الحال دون تمويه أو تزيين، تتميز "رسالة الكلم الثمان" إذاً بواقعية صارمة ناتجة عن تخلف أحوال البلاد والأعمال والأخلاق.
تشكل "رسالة الكلم الثمان للشيخ حسين المرصفى (1815م- 1890م) محاولة فرية في بابها. إذ يحاول مؤلفها أن يشرح بعض الكلمات والألفاظ التي تتردد على ألسنة الناس. وإذا كانت الرسالة تهدف بالدرجة الأولى إلى شرح معانى: وطن، حرية، أمة، حكومة، عدل، ظلم، سياسة، تربية، فإن المؤلف يتجاوز هذا الهدف ليجعل من رسالته أو كتابه محاولة تأويلية لأسباب الانحطاط ومحاولة لرسم ملامح برنامج إصلاحى إجتماعى تشكل "التربية" النقطة المركزية فيه.
