يعرض الكتاب الأحداث والوقائع كما هي مشفوعة بوثائق وصور، ويقدم تحليلاً عميقاً لأسباب الانتكاسة التي حصلت لاحقاً، والتي بدأت بصناعة الفشل من قبل بول بريمر بمساعدة بعض مساعديه من الأمريكيين والعراقيين بعد تسلمه قيادة سلطة التحالف، وامتداد تأثيرات هذه الفترة على الفترات اللاحقة.
