إذا كانت الطاقة من الموضوعات الحيوية البالغة الأهمية، قديماً وحديثاً، والتي يعقد حولها العديد من المؤتمرات والندوات والاجتماعات الاقليمية والدولية، مثل مؤتمر الطاقة العالمي، ومؤتمر الطاقة العربي، وغيرهما، فإن الطاقات الطاقات المتجددة أصبحت أمل المستقبل كبديل لابد منه للطاقات المستنفدة أو التي هي علي وشك الاضمحلال والزوال. فلو أخذنا الطاقة الشمسية، علي سبيل المثال، لوجدنا كما هائلا من التطبيقات العلمية عليها، فهناك الهندسة المعمارية الشمسية، والتدفئة الشمسية، وتسخين الماء الشمسي، والتجفيف الشمسي، والطباخ الشمسي، والفرن الشمسي، والمضخة الحرارية الشمسية، وغيرها.
وقد أصبحت الأسواق العالمية تعج بالأجهزة المصممة لامتصاص الاشعاع الشمسي الساقط وتحويله إلي طاقة حرارية. ولعل من الأمثلة الهامة علي ذلك، طاقة المحيطات والبحار التي تشمل طاقة المد والجزر، وطاقة الموج، وفروق درجات الحرارة بين المياه العميقة والمياه السطحية، وفروق الملوحة..
وهناك طاقة الرياح، وطاقة الكتلة الحيوية، وطاقة الحرارة الجوية،... والقائمة طويلة.
ونظراً إلي أن التقدم التقاني المتسارع في مجالات الطاقة المختلفة، يرافقه تقدم هائل ومتزايد في المصطلحات العلمية الدقيقة، فقد أصبح من أولوية الأولويات التصدي لهذا الجانب لتوفير المصطلح العربي الدقيق للتعبير عن هذه المفاهيم التقنية المتجددة.
وفي هذا الإطار قام مكتب تنسيق التعريب بالرباط بإصدار هذا المعجم، وقد رتب هذا المعجم ألفبائياً، انطلاقاً من الإنجليزية مع مقابلات فرنسية وعربية. ولقد احتفظنا في حالة الضرورة بأكثر من مقابل عربي خصوصاً في حالة تعدد مفاهيم المصطلح الأجنبي الواحد، كما زود المعجم بفهرسين فرنسي وعربي مرتبين ترتيباً ألفبائياً كذلك، مع رقم كل مصطلح كما ورد في الأإنجليزية.
