في هذا الكتاب روايات قصيرة أكثر من قصص، "عن شكل العالم"، "المجهول يجذب الشباب"، قصتان عشتُ معهما سنواتٍ عديدة.
الأولى وُلدت من مزحة مزحتها مع ابنتي مارتا، حين كانت صغيرة، ذات مساء بينما كنّا نتمشى في حديقة بِرالتا راموس في مار دِ بلاتا، انتبهت إلى أنّ الحديقة كانت تُشبه بونتا دِل إستِ فقلتُ لمارتا الصغيرة إنّنا وصلنا دون أن ننتبه عبر نفقٍ إلى شاطئ أوروغواي.
لستُ واثقاً من أنّ النقّادَ يعرفون دائماً مشاكل الكتّاب الحقيقيّة، عندما كنتُ أُبَيِّضُ قصصَ الكتابِ، أمليتُ على سكرتيرتي جملة: "بطلُ النساء ليس دائماً بطل الرجال".
قالت لي: "بطلُ النساء عنوان جيّد"، انتبهتُ على الفور إلى أنّها على حقّ واتّبعتُ نصيحتها، إذا ما اكتشف أحدٌ خطأً في نصوصي يبدو لي دقيقاً أشعر بنفسي سعيداً جدّاً وأُقدِّرُ إمكانيةَ تصحيحه، ما أحبَبتُ قط الغرورَ، ولا حتى حبَّ الذات، أعتقد أنّ الأشخاص المغرورين مقيّدون إلى الخطأ.
