دراسة فريدة لم يسبق إليها فيما أعلم ، فهو يتناول طائفة من المؤرخين المبكرين الذين وصفوا حياة الرسول وكتبوا فيها المؤلفات. فيذكر ترجمة وافيه لهم، مبينا مراكزهم الاجتماعية ، وأعمالهم الرسمية ويعنى بنشأتهم العلمية ، وكيف حصلوا على معارفهم وآرائهم العلمية. ثم يتناول ما ألفوا من كتب ، ويقف عندها طويلا ، ملخصا محتوياتها واصفا قيمتها الفنية ، وأخيرا يصف ما كتبوا في المغازي بالمعنى الخاص أو العام ، ومقدار ارتباطها بحياة النبي في مكة وفي المدينة ، أو ارتباطها بالحياة الإسلامية عامة. هذا الجهد المشكور الذي قام به المؤلف في عرض تاريخ السيرة علميا موفقا ، من أمس الدراسات وألزمها لمن يهتمون بتاريخ الثقافة الإسلامية عامة في الشرق ، هذا ،فعلى هذا الأساس يمكننا أن نفيس تاريخ التأليف في الحديث والتفسير والاشتراع والعقائد ، وفي التاريخ والنحو واللغة .. إلخ فننهج هذا المنهج الموفق في تاريخ كثير من العلوم ونستخرج بناء عليه نتائج ذات شأن وخطر لا تدور بخلدنا الآن.
