يُعتبَر وليام كارلوس وليامز (1883- 1963)، في نظر كلّ النقاد، أعظمَ شاعرٍ أصيل أنتجته أميركا في القرن العشرين، فهو لم يُغيّر الشّعر الأميركي فحسب بل غيّر حتّى طريقة التناول النقدي لهذا الشّعر.
يقف وليامز على رأس الحداثة الأميركية مع باوند وجيرترود شتاين، لكنه تفوّق عليهما وعلى اليوت بالذات، بتركيزه على الواقع المحلي، مبيّناً كونيّة هذا الواقع وثراءه الشعري ما إن تتوسّع نظرتُنا إليه، كما أنّه أحدث إنزياحاً في الشّعر نحو الإعتماد على الصور والأشياء الملموسة بدلاً من جعلِه وعاءَ إستغلالِ الإنفعال والمزاج والإسقاط الذاتي.
لا يرى وليامز فرقاً بين مهنته كطبيبِ توليد وكونه شاعراً: فهو كما يُخرج الطفل من رحم أُمّهِ، يستولد القصيدةَ من رحم الواقع اليومي، وينقل إلينا كلّ ما يتراءى له عبر الأشجار، الشّوارع، المواسم، النفّايات، الفقراء، والمُرضى، من شعرِ طليقِ، بكلامٍ أميركي حيّ مُتخلّص من لغة شكسبير، لغة العالم القديم!...
فالشاعر، في نظر وليامز، هو ابنُ يومِه، ويومُه هذا له شبكته الكلاميّة... ينبغي للشاعر أنْ يعمل بها على إصطياد الحقيقة ووضعها في القفص.
هذه أوّل انطولوجيا بالعربية تضم ما يقارب 160 قصيدة له، لم تُعَدّ لقارئ عاطفي منكودِ يبحث عن مجازات شعرية تستقطر مآقيه، أو صورِ فانتازية تبهره بتصوير عوالم غير موجودة، وإنما أُعِدَّت لكي يدرك القارئ أنّ الحداثة التي يجب أن تشكّل رؤية شاملة، تكمنُ حواليه؛ وأنَّ الشّاعرَ الحقيقي، كوليامز، "يعرفُ كيفَ يكونَ مرآة هذه الحداثة".
