إنه من الأهمية بمكان معرفة مفهوم الاختلاط ومحدداته؛ لكي تتضح صوره وأحكامه وكذلك نتائجه وآثاره، ومن خلال ذلك يمكن أن نفرِّق بين ما هو اختلاط وما هو غير ذلك، فهذا المصطلح ما زال غامضًا وغير واضح؛ ما أدى إلى كثير من الالتباس عند العامة والخاصة، نتج منه تساهل كبير في تناول هذا الموضوع، الأمر الذي أدى إلى اعتقاد بعض الناس أن حكم الاختلاط مباح، وذلك بناءً على أن الاختلاط بين الجنسين والتعاون المشترك بينهما في مجالات الحياة كافة (من عمل مهني، وتنمية، وعلم، وتعليم، وعبادة، وثقافة، وفن، ورياضة...إلخ) سنة من سنن العمران، والاجتماع البشري السوي، ولا تستقيم الحياة الطبيعية إلا به، ولا شك أن هذا تجنٍ واضح وخلط للمفاهيم؛ ذلك أن الاختلاط في عالمنا العربي والإسلامي ـ في العصر الحاضر ـ أصبحت له صور كثيرة ومتعددة، كما هي الحال في العالم الغربي تماماً الذي لا يُقيم للدين والأخلاق وزنًا.
لذا كان من الواجب إيضاح مفهوم الاختلاط وصوره وأحكامه ونتائجه وآثاره، في ضوء ما جاء في الكتاب والسنة وكلام السلف
