بدأنا بنشر شعر زهير, ورجعنا فيه إلى مصادر مخطوطة, منها هذا المخطوط الذى يجمع شعر زهير وشعر ابنه كعب, ورمزنا له بالحرف "أ" ورمزنا للمخصوطات الأخرى بالحروف ب, ج, د. ورجعنا كذلك إلى مخطوط آخر من مخطوطات المرحوم مصطفى باشا فاضل فيه شعر زهير. وفى آخر هذه المقدمة وصف مسهب لهذه النسخ جميعا. وكانت نسخة الأم التى اعتمدنا عليها هى نسخة أ أثبتنا ماورد فيها كاملا, وزدنا إليه ماورد فى النسخ الأخرى مع التنبيه على هذه الزيادة فى مواضعها.
وقد رجعنا أيضا إلى شرح الأعلم الشنتمرى الذى نشره المستشرق لندبرج السويدى وطبعه بليدن سنة 1306 هجرى وأثبتنا عنه فى التعليقات ما ذهب إليه الأعلم فى شرح الأبيات مخالفا لما ذهب إليه الشارح. وعلقنا على كل ذلك بمل يحتاج إلى التعليق, بعد الرجوع إلى أمهات المصادر الأخرى فى الأدب والتاريخ واللغة.
ثم ذيلنا هذا الديوان بفهارس مختلفة أولها فهرس الكلمات اللغوية, عسى أن يكون فيه ألفاظ أو تراكيب لم توردها معجمات اللغة, فتكون مددا ولويسيرا لهذه المعجمات, ثم فهارس أخرى للأعلام والبلدان والكتب والقوافى والأمثال مما هو مبين آخر هذا الديوان.
