من مؤلفات شيخنا (الصدوق) رحمه الله هذا الكتاب الذي نقدمه للقراء الأفاضل "علل الشرائع والإحكام والأسباب" كما كتب في صدر الكتاب يتضمن (385) باباً، أول الأبواب (العلة التي من أجلها سميت السماء سماء والدنيا دنيا، والآخرة آخرة، والعلة التي من أجلها سمي آدم آدم، وحواء حواء، والدرهم درهماً، والدينار ديناراً، والعلة التي من أجلها قيل للفرس (أجد) وللبغلة (عد)، والعلة التي من أجلها قيل للحمار (حر).
وأما آخر الأبواب فهو في نوادر العلل ولم نعلم سبب تأليفه للكتاب ولا تاريخ تأليفه، وقد طبع الكتاب مرة سنة 1289هـ وثانية سنة 1311هـ وألحق به معاني الأخبار له أيضاً، كما ألحق به كتاب الروضة في الفضائل الذي لم نعرف مؤلفه، وثالثة سنة 1387هـ.
وكل هذه الطبعات الثلاث بمطابع إيران، وهي غير خالية من الأخطار المطبعية وبعض النقصان في بعض طبعاتها، وطبعتنا هذه النجفية هي غاية في التصحيح والإتقان فقد قوبلت مع بعض أفاضل النجف الأشرف وفق الله طابعها ومصححها.
