"قلتُ لِحماري" كتاب فكري أدبي يستخدم الجدال في طرح الأفكار، ويعالج الأفكار المطروحة عالمياً للمبادئ المختلفة، مثل الرأسمالية والديمقراطية والمبدأ الاشتراكي، وغيرها من المبادئ النفعية، وكذلك الفكر الإسلامي، ووجهة نظر الإسلام.
يصوِّر الكتاب شخصية رجل الشارع في العالم، والأفكار التي يحملها، والمقاييس والقناعات التي يبني عليها معاملاته وعلاقاته بنفسه، وعلاقته بغيره من الأفراد والمجتمعات. كما يصوِّر طريقة التفكير التي ينتهجها ويستخدمها العالم اليوم، في التعامل مع أمور الحياة العامة، والأفكار والمبادئ المطروحة، وطريقة التفكير في إعطاء وجهات النظر في الأحداث العالمية الكوارثية، وفي كيفية إيجاد الحلول للمشكلات، على المستوى الشخصي والجماعي والعالمي. كما يتناول الكتاب مسائل تهم بناء شخصية الفرد، وما يترتب على بنائها من علاقته بالحياة التي تحيط به، كالحديث عن الحرية والسعادة وأهميتهما، ككثير من الأفكار في بناء الشخصية.
انتهج المؤلف أسلوباً أدبياً شيقاً، في هيئة حوار وجدال بين طرفين مغايرين، الكاتب فيه هو الطرف الأول، أما الطرف الثاني فهو نموذج حي لشخصية رجل الشارع البسيط، والرجل المثقف، وطالب العلم، وأصحاب الشهادات العليا، في صورة مخلوق حيواني، اختارها الكاتب لتكون "الحمار" لاعتبارات أوردها المؤلف بين صفحات كتابه، حيث أن المواضيع التي يتحدث عنها الكتاب مواضيع فكرية غير سهلة التناول عادة، كما هي لعامة القُرَّاء غير سهلة الاستيعاب، ويصعب الاستمتاع بها إذا لم تُقدم بصورة شيقة، وسهلة الطرح والأسلوب.
عرض الكتاب كثيراً من التحاليل النفسية والعقلية لشخصية الأفراد، استناداً للأفكار التي يحملونها، وذكر أثر هذه الأفكار عليهم في سلوكهم الاجتماعي، وأثرها على مواقفهم من الحياة التي يعيشونها، اجتماعياً واقتصادياً ودولياً. قدم الكتاب هذا الحوار في خمسة عشر فصلاً لمواضيع مختلفة وذلك لغرض التبسيط والتشويق للأفكار المُتناولة.
