هذا كتاب جمع فيه مؤلفه الإمام أبو سعد الماليني أخبار صفوة من أئمة التصوف المشهود لهم بالخير والصلاح مما تدعو المسلم إلى تربية روحه وتزكيتها، ولا شك أن الإطلاع على أخبار الصالحين الذين شهد روحه وتزكيتها، ولا شك أن الإطلاع على أخبار الصالحين الذين شهد لهم الأئمة بصلاحهم وتأسيهم برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، هي البديلة للإنحرافات والتجاوزات التي وقع فيها بعض من سموا بالمتصوفة ممن جاء بقضايا فلسفية وافدة من الأمم السابقة خالفت المنهج السلفي القديم، وعكرت صفاء العقيدة، وفتحت الثغرات الواسعة لكل مبتدع أو زنديق ليدخل من هذا الباب باسم التصوف.
وقد قام الدكتور "عامر صبري" بالتعليق عليه، وتخريج أحاديثه، وخدمته خدمة تليق به وبمؤلفه. وهذا الكتاب يرى النور لأول مرة، وهو أول كتاب يصدر لأبي سعد الماليني. وقد قدم الكتاب بدراسة، اشتملت على ثلاثة أبواب، ذكر في الباب الأول كلمة حول الصوفية وتطورها، أما الباب الثاني فقد خصص للتعريف بالمؤلف، فذكرت نبذة عن عصره، ثم الكلام عن حياته، وتضمن الباب الثالث -هو الأخير- الكلام عن كتاب الأربعين في شيوخ الصوفية.
وقد وضع في آخر الكتاب فهارس تكشف عن مضامين الكتاب وموضوعاته.
