يحيط هذا الكتاب بكل ما يختص بالفاتيكان، كدولة، وكمرجع ديني، بالنسبة إلى شعوب الأرض قاطبة، من قيم روحية وإنسانية وأخلاقية وإجتماعية، فهو خير شاهد على ما للقيم الحق من حرمة وخلود، أولاً، أما ثانياً فتكمن في أهدافه وهي أن يتلاقى المؤمنون على أرضه كرمز للمحبة ولرسالة (المسيح) التي جاء بها وبشر العالمين بنورها.
يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة كتبها رئيس المجلس الحبري للثقافة الكردينال بول بوبار (روما، في 15 أيلول/ سبتمبر 1995) وهو مساعد مقرب من البابوات، وهم يوحنا الثالث والعشرون وبولس السادس، في أمانة سر الدولة من سنة (1959 إلى سنة 1971) ثم يوحنا بولس الثاني منذ سنة (1981) بعد أن كان لمدة عشر سنوات مدير المؤسسة الكاثوليكية. وفي هذه المقدمة تعريف بالفاتيكان "الذي هو مركز النشاط اليومي للقديس بطرس ومعاونيه من كرادلة وأساقفة وكهنة ورهبان وعلمانيين آتين من القارات الخمس، يجذب كالمغنطيس رؤساء الدول ورؤساء الكنائس والأساقفة والمؤمنين الذين ينتظر منهم عشرة ملايين في سنة 2000 المعتبرة سنة مقدسة".
وعبر صفحات الكتاب يقدم المؤلف بول بوبار، وصفاً لكل الكاتدرائيات في الفاتيكان، ومنها ساحة القديس بطرس وأعمدة برنان، وهياكل برنيني وميكال آنج، وقبور البابوات، الأقبية الفاتيكانية، وحاضرة الفاتيكان (مدفن الرسول بطرس)، والصرح البابوي، وجولة مكاتب الفاتيكان، والحياة داخله وقوانينه وما يحتويه من مطبعة ومكتبة وقصور تتمتع بالحصانة السياسية، ودوائر وأجهزة، مثل دائرة "الإكليروس" ، "دائرة الحياة المكرسة وجمعيات الحياة الرسولية، والمجالس البابوية "المجلس البابوي للعلمانيين" وغيره من مجالس ووظائفها إلى غير ذلك من متاحف "متحف يبوس - كليمنس" و "متحف الفن الحديث" ... الخ. هذه العناوين تحتوي بداخلها كل ما تريد معرفته عن "الفاتيكان - عاصمة الكثلكة في العالم".
