تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في الدولة العثمانية في القرن السابع عشر حيث يستشري الوهن في الدولة، وتحيط بها الأخطار من كل جانب؛ صفويون شيعة في الشرق يحاربون تحت راية الأئمة، وبولونيون في الغرب يرفعون الصليب. وبينهما سلطان درويش القفص، وآخر ينقلب على نفسه، وسيرة الغزاة الأوائل تدنست بدسائس الحريم، تطاردها سيوف الإنكشارية وتنكأ جروح شيوخ الإسلام، تكتب بالوجد والدماء فصولاً لا تنتهي من كتاب السراي.
