يعد الإمام السيوطي مصنف هذا الكتاب من جهابذة علماء الشريعة الإسلامية، فقد كان من القلة الذين لم يتركوا علماً من علوم الدين والعربية إلا وتركوا لنا فيه مؤلفاً جديداً بالقراءة والاقتناء والدراسة العميقة ومن يقرأ له كتاباً في أي موضوع كتب فيه يعتقد انه متفوّق في العلوم جميعاً، حتى ليصعب على الموقف أن يعين العلم الذي تميز به، لأنه بلغ القمة فيها جميعاً.
لقد عدّ لنا متتبعو مؤلفات السيوطي نيفاً ومئة كتاب في مختلف الموضوعات وأغلبها في العلوم الإسلامية، وفي العلوم القرآنية، ومن أشهر هذه المصنفات كتاب "الاتقان في علوم القرآن" وهو الذي نقلب صفحاته، والذي يذكر فيه ما وصل إلى علمه من مسائل علوم القرآن، وجعله مقدمة للتفسير الكبير، وضمنه العديد من القواعد والشوارد وفيه استعرض جميع ما كان في عصره من مؤلفات في علوم القرآن الكريم ملخصاً ما فيها تلخيصاً لا إحلال فيه، فما رأى فيها من بديع الفكرة إلا قطفه.
وما رأى فيها من خطأ إلا قومه، ثم أنه يقارن بين الآراء المختلفة في الموضوع الواحد، فيرجح ما رآه يستحق الترجيح. وفوق ذلك فقد أضاف أشياء مبتكرة عن فكره وفهمه تشهد له بسعة الفهم وعمقه، وقد وصل إلى أمور لم يتوصل إليها من سبقوه. والمؤلف في كل موضوع من موضوعات الكتاب تراه يذكر الكتب التي نقل عنها. وهي لو جمعت الآن لملأت خزائن كثيرة. وان كثيراً من هذه الكتب لا نعرفها اليوم ولم تصل إلينا، فهو في كتابه هذا قد حفظ أثمن ما فيها وإن لم يحفظها كلها، لقد نقل إلينا زبدة القول فيها، وهذا أمر بالغ الأهمية.
والكتاب يدل من عنوانه على ما في حقيقته، فهو يضم علوماً عدة، فكل موضوع من موضوعاته هو كتاب قائم بذاته، ولا يجمعه بسواه من الموضوعات سوى أنه متعلق بالقرآن الكريم. وكل موضوع أشبه ما يكون (بالمتن المختصر) المركز بحيث يستحق من العلماء أن يعمدوا إليه، ويشرحوه، ويفصلوه. وهذا لا يعني أن أسلوب الكتاب ثقيل على السمع بل العكس هو الصحيح، ولكن الكتاب لكثرة تركيزه في بعض الموضوعات لا يفهمه إلا أرباب الاختصاص في علوم القرآن. ولكنه في مواضيع أخرى يستطيع كل مثقف ثقافة إسلامية متوسطة أن يعيها وعياً كافياً.
