إن ما ينتاب المؤمن، أو يحل به من مصائب لا ينتزع منه العلو والعزّة ما دام مؤمناً وما المصائب والفتن إلا اختبارات تبين مدى ما يمتلك العبد من الإيمان. وهي ضرورية للمؤمن تشحذ همته، وتنمي إيمانه. وقد اقتضته حكمة الله في خلقه أن يعرضهم للاختبار حباً بهم ورعاية لهم، فالعباد ليسوا في منأى عن وخزات الرحمن التي تهدي الضال، وتنبيه الغافل، وتقيم الحجة على الكافر. ولعل من حكمة الابتلاء أنه فرصة لمراجعة حسابات مضت، ووفقة أمام تطلعات لمستقبل آت. هذا ما يحاول توضيحه الإمام ابن القيم الجوزية في كتابه هذا ليعيد المؤمن حساباته في ابتلاءاته ولينظر إليها بعين الحكيم ليعرف الحكمة منها. إلى جانب ذلك ففي هذا الكتاب يضرب سيد قطب مثلاً على فائدة البلوى للمسلم من خلال حادثة الأفك التي كانت خيراً، ولم تكن شراً في الحساب الإلهي لأنها كشفت عن الكائدين للإسلام في شخص رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأهل بيته.
