لقد كان للأشراف من ذرية سبطي رسول الله صلى الله تعالى وعليه وعلى آله وسلم لله تعالى دورٌ قياديٌ في تاريخ المسلمين، فكانت لهم المنزلة الروحية العميقة لدى الناس لقرابتهم من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومن ذلك كانت إمرة (الحاج) بيد إبراهيم المرتضى الملقب بالأصغر بن الإمام موسى الكاظم عليهما السلام، ثم تعاظم دور الإشراف في هذه القيادة فقامت الدولة الإسلامية (العباسية) في بداية القرن الرابع الهجري بتأسيس أول نقابة للسادة الأشراف، تُعنى بشؤون المنتسبين لآل البيت، وتسمّى بها الكثير من الآل أمثال السيد الشريف المرتضى والسيد الشريف الرضي، وتوالت تسمية السيادة والشرفية من ذلك الزمان إلى يومنا الحاضر، وبتأثيرات عدّة اضمحل أثر نقابة السادة الأشراف ودورها بسبب التدخلات الشعوبية والإستعمارية، وفي التسعينات من القرن المنصرم تولدت الفكرة بإعادة تأسيس نقابة السادة الأشراف في العراق بحيث تمتد إلى البلاد العربية والإسلامية كافة، على أن يتم تأسيسها وفق صيغ علمية وموضعية تتلاءم مع الظروف حينذاك.
وقد ضمت لجان النقابة خبراء ونسابين من السادة الأشراف وغيرهم من غير السادة من ذوي الخبرة وقامت اللجنة بدور فعّال في مجال إختصاصها حيث استعرضت مئات المشجّرات المقدمة وأبدت ملاحظاتها بكل أمانة ودونتها بمحاضر إجتماع، وعملت على إكمال الوثائق، والمستندات، والمشجرات، والسجلات، والأقراض المدمجة، وتوثيق خطوات العمل كلها، وجميع هذه الوثائق، والأقراص الخاصة بالنقابة تم الإحتفاظ بها منعاً للضياع والتلف.
وبهدف نشر مضمون عمل هذه اللجان، أعدّ المحقق معتز الحديثي هذا الكتاب ليكون مرجعاً للنسّابين والمؤرخين في إثبات نسب هذه العاشر، وقد حرص عدم إضافة أو حذف أي شيء مما ورد فيه، توخياً للإمانة، وقام بوضع فهارس بحسب أسماء العشائر لتسهيل العودة إليها، وعمل على تدقيق مضمون القرص المدن الخاص بقرارات اللجان النسبية، فقام بتصحيح الأخطاء الإملائية والنحوية والنسبية العديدة.
وتكمن أهميّة هذا الكتاب البالغة في كونه صحَّح الأنساب العلوية في محافظات العراق كلها، وميَّز الدخيل عليها من الأصيل، فأصبح ذخيرة ومرجعاً للباحثين والمؤرخين، وبه يكفيهم مؤنة السؤال.
