لم أجد بين شعراء صقلية- فيما أعلم- من هو أشد بغضا للنورمانديين من ابن حمديس، فقد ناصبهم العداء، ورأى فيهم عدوه اللدود، وخصمه العنيد فأخذ يدعو إلى حربهم ويغرى المسلمين بالتناصر، ويوازن بين عهد الوحدة العربية التي لم تسمح للاستعمار بالتدخل، وبين عصر التفرق الذي ترك العرب كيد أصابها المرض والضعف، فلم تعد تقوى على ضرب عدوها ضربة قاصمة، وذلك قوله.
وقد كان هذا الشاعر كثير التنقل بين "المهدية وبجاية وقابس وسفاقس..." وغيرها من مدن شمال افريقية، تاركا أهله وذويه، معانيا قسوة الاقلال ضائقا بسوء الحال، فإذا اختلط بالناس مدح وهنأ ووصف ونادم وسامر وإذا خلا إلى نفسه تأمل وتصبر وتشكى، وإذا افتقد الأحياء من أهله، فلم يجدهم جن وتشوق وأن تذكر موتاهم تحسر ورثى.
وأخذت هذه المشاعر تجذبه تارة هنا وتارة هناك، تطبع نتاجه الفني بالبشاشة مرة والعبوس أخرى، فأتى صورة من نفسه، ومرآة لما مر به من الأحداث.
وفي "بجاية" وبعد ثمانين عاما من مولد ابن حمديس الصقلي يأتي عام 527هـ 1132ن فتسقط قيثارة الشعر من يده، فيلبي نداء ربه مخلفاً وراءه هذا التراث الشعري الرائع.
وقد حاولت بهذا البحث أن أكشف عن شاعرية ابن صقلية الوفي، ومقومات فنه الشعرى، فمهدت لذلك بدراسة إحصائية عن أوزانه وقوافيه وأغراضه واعتمدت على هذه الدراسة في كثير مما أصدرت من أحكام.
ثم أفردت باباً لدراسة فنون شعره وقد اشتمل هذا الباب على خمسة فصول؛ أولها: لفن المديح، وثانيها: لفن الوصف: وثالثها: للغزل، ورابعها، للرثاء، وجعلت خامسها تحت عنوان صراع مع الحياة. وتحت هذا العنوان درست بقية أغراض شعره: الهجاء والزهد والفكاهة والفخر والحماسة والشعر الحكمي. كما درست مجموعة أخرى من قصائد أطلقت عليها اسم "صراع غير منظم مع الحياة". واستقل الباب الثاني بالدراسة الفنية لشعره، وفي الباب الثالث أوضحت منزلة ابن حمديس في موكب الأدب العربي.
