نشر المستشرق هنري جورج فارمر هذا الكتاب في لندن عام 1930م، وهو يقدّم فيه مجموعة من الحقائق التاريخيّة عن التأثير الموسيقي العربيّ في الموسيقى الغربيّة الأوروبيّة خلال العصور الوسطى، ويُدافع عن هذا الدور الحاسم الّذي حاول بعض العلماء الأوروبيّين التقليل من شأنه وإغفاله.
احتوى الكتاب ثمانية فصول، وثمانية وأربعين ملحقاً تضمّنت ردود فارمر – الموثّقة بالشواهد والأدلّة العلميّة والتاريخيّة – على غلاة معارضيه من علماء الموسيقى الأوروبيين الّذين يعزون تطوّر هذه الموسيقى ونهضتها، وينسبونها إلى المؤثّرات الإغريقيّة القديمة، ولا يعترفون بأيّ دور للموسيقى العربيّة في تلك النّهضة. ومن المعروف أنّ فارمر قام بنشر العديد من الكتب والمقالات والأبحاث عن تاريخ الموسيقى العربيّة طوال عقود النّصف الأوّل من القرن العشرين، كما شارك في عديد المؤتمرات والندوات الّتي عقدت في هذا الخصوص داخل أوروبا وخارجها. وهذا كلّه يعزّز قيمة هذا الكتاب العلميّة والتاريخيّة، ويمنحه الجدارة والتميّز والقراءة المعمّقة.
