جاءت هذه الدراسة لتغطي حقبة مهمة من حقبات تاريخ اليمن الإقتصادي وتبيّن الدور المُمَيّز الذي لعبته الموانئ والمدن اليمني في نشاطها التجاري خلال الفترة الزمنية الممتدة منذ قيام دولة بني زياد وحتى سقوط الدولة الصليحية (204- 535هـ) (819- 1137هـ) على المستويين الداخلي والخارجي.
وقد تزامن هذا النشاط مع إزدهار العالم الإسلامي والصعود الحضاري الذي حققه المسلمون آنذاك، حيث أعلنت الكثير من الأقاليم إستقلالها عن الخلافة الإسلامية في بغداد فتشكلت دولاً في شتى بقاع العالم الإسلامي الشرقي والغربي، ولم تكن اليمن بعيدة عن هذه الأحداث حيث بدأت حركة الإنفصال الإقليمي فيها تظهر مع مطلع القرن الثالث الهجري - التاسع الميلادي، حيث تقاسم النفوذ هناك مجموعة من الأسر الحاكمة لعب بعض حكامها دوراً محورياً في دفع عجلة التنمية والنشاط التجاري خاصة في الأقاليم المطلة على سواحل البحار من خلال جهودهم في توحيد القوانين والتنظيمات في جميع المراصد التهامية مما نتج عنه بروز النشاط التجاري على الصعيدي الداخلي والخارجي وإظهار الدور الرئيسي الذي لعبه اليمنيون كوسطاء تجاريين بين الشرق والغرب.
