ما يزال الوقود الكاربوني من فحم ونفط وغاز يمثل المصدر الرئيس للطاقة وللكهرباء تحديداً، إلّا أنّه باعث عن حرقه للغازات الفينة المسئولة عن الاحتباس الحراري والمسبب لارتفاع درجة حرارة الأرض منذراً بكوارث وخيمة للحياة. وهو ناضب لا محالة.
ولذلك تسعى دول العالم باهتمام بالغ وبميزانيات متزايدة لتطويع مصادر الطاقة المتجددة كطاقة الشمس والرياح والحرارة الجيولوجية والوصول بها الى مستوى المصادر الاقتصادية ذات الموثوقية. إلّا أنّها تشكو من عقبات مبدئية في كيفية أسرها وتحويلها وفي أسلوب ربط انتاجيتها القليلة والمتذبذبة بمنظومة نقل القدرة الكهربائية. ويبقى افضل استخدام لبعضها حالياً في خدمات موقعية وفي الأرياف ليس لتوليد الكهرباء فحسب بل لتحلية المياه المالحة حيث الفائدة الانسانية تتفرق على كلفتها العالية وقلة انتاجيتها.
ولهذه الأسباب ولغيرها تضل الطاقة النووية المصدر المعول عليه إذ يوجد حالياً 435 مفاعلاً نووياً منتجاً للكهرباء في 30 دولة تنتج ما نسبته 16% من محمل القدرة الكهربائية المنتجة عالمياً. لا يتبنى هذا الكتاب رأي المتحمسين للتوسع في استغلال الطاقة النووية للكهرباء، ولا ينحاز الى المتخوفين منها بل يتضمن تبيان الحقائق العلمية والحلقات التكنولوجية بما في ذلك انشاء محطات نووية للكهرباء متداخلة في الموقع والخدمات والمنتوج مع محطات تحلية المياه المالحة ذات الأهمية القصوى في البلاد العربية والتي تمتلك حالياً 46% من مجمل منظومات تحلية المياه المالحة دولياً وبإنتاجية 12.2 مليون متر مكعب يومياً يتطلب تشغيلها مقادير كبيرة من الكهرباء. ويتوقع أن تزداد الحاجة لكليهما مستقبلاً بسبب النمو السكاني وتنامي سكان المدن ونمو الصناعة.
بين الفصل الأول من الكتاب الذي يشرح المبادئ الأساسية للعلوم النووية وبين الفصل الرابع عشر الذي يعالج أزمة الكهرباء والماء العذب عالمياً وعربياً حالياً ومستقبلياً، تتطرق الفصول الأخرى إلى احتياطات اليورانيوم وتنقيته وتخصيبه وتصنيعه وقوداً لأنواع المفاعلات وإلى سلامة المحطات النووية وحوادثها المعروفة والمخمنة وإلى معالجة الوقود المستنفذ لاتقاء مخاطره الإشعاعية وإلى تفكيك المحطات النووية بانتهاء عمرها التشغيلي.
