يغطي الكتاب بمجموع فصوله ومباحثه عصر صدر الإسلام من المبعث النبوي إلى عصر الخلفاء الراشدين، فيتحدث عن لقاء المهاجرين والأنصار في سقيفة بني ساعدة بعد وفاة الرسول (ص) وكيف تمت البيعة لأبي بكر، وموقف علي بن أبي طالب (رضي الله عنه) من بيعة الصديق، ثم يفند الكتاب خلافة كل واحد من الخلفاء الراشدين الأربعة وسياسته داخل وخارج حدود دولة الإسلام الأولى إلى آخر ذلك من صفحات من التاريخ الإسلامي وسمت بطابعها تلك الفترة واتخذت عناوين متعددة ارتبطت بكل حادثة مثل: حصار الخليفة عثمان بن عفان واستشهاده، الخليفة الرابع على بن أبي طالب وجهاده في الإسلام، خطبة البيعة، عصر علي ومعاوية، وقعة الجمل، الموقف بعد الجمل، موقعة صفّين، سياسة الخوارج، المرحلة الأخيرة من خلافة علي رضي الله عنه واستشهاده. تلك هي عناوين الكتاب.
