هذا الكتاب ليس كتاباً منهجياً لمعالجة "الدافعية" بل هو يهدف إلى تبسيط علمي لموضوع الدافعية عند التلاميذ وهو يستقي أمثلته وتجاربه من السياق المدرسي وقد دلتنا التجارب والبحوث على أن الدافعية كلما ازدادت ازداد معها النشاط ودام. يعرض الكتاب لبعض النظريات في الدافعية وخاصة تلك التي تقوم على سند تجريبي. يتألف الكتاب من سبعة فصول يعرض الفصلان "الأول والثاني" أمثلة وتجارب أساسية أجريت على الحيوان. في حين يتناول الفصل الثالث: تعلم تثبيط العزائم ويخلص إلى أن الاستكانة المكتبية تنشأ عندما يصبح التلميذ غير مدرك لجدوى عمله وإن الطلبات المغالية أو التضخم في الدروس من عوامل تثبيط العزائم.
أما الفصل الرابع يبحث موضوع الكفاءة وحرية التصرف الذاتي حيث يؤكد على أن الدافعية الداخلية محصلة شعورين: الكفاءة المدركة وحرية التصرف الذاتي. وفي الفصل الخامس يتناول المؤلفات: "الأنا" أو المهمة، فيخلصا إلى أن معرفة النتائج تخفض الدافعية الداخلية في وضع التقويم ,إن اهتمام التلميذ يجب أن يوجه إلى المهمة لتثمين الجهد. وفي الفص السادس الذي يدور حول هدف الأداء وهدف التعليم، يجد الباحثان أن معرفة هدف التعلم يساعد على اتخاذ مواقف إيجابية وأن الصعوبة سلاح ذو حدين إنها تزيد في الاهتمام لكنها تؤدي إلى تنمية الشعور بعدم الكفاءة. وفي الفصل السابع الذي يدور حول الذاكرة والدافعية يعتقد المؤلفان أن للدافعية تأثير ضعيف على الذاكرة وأنها تؤثر على المستويات العليا من الذاكرة ولا سيما على الذاكرة الدلالية.
