لقد استطاع عروة بن الورد أن يرفع من شأن حركة الصعلكة وأن يضفي عليها صبغة محببة بما أشاع فيها من نزعة إنسانية خلقية تهدف إلى تحقيق التعاضد الاجتماعي والتعاطف الإنساني في المجتمع بعد أن كان اتجاهها يميل إلى السلب والغزو وسفك الدماء حبًا في الانتقام والتشفي من الأعداء، كما يبدو في سيرة الشاعرين الصعلوكين الشنقري الأزدي وتأبط شرًا، ويتصف عروة بن الورد بالفروسية والشجاعة والجود وإيثار الآخرين والتضحية في سبيلهم وحسن القيادة والحكمة والصبر والتفكير السليم، لهذا كله تبوأ مكانة رفيعة في قبيلته ومجتمعه، فلم يضطر إلى مغادرة حمي القبيلة على شاكلة الصعاليك الآخرين، حتى إن قبيلته كانت تأتم بشعره، لقد استطاع عروة بأخلاقه الحميدة وسيرته النبيلة أن ينتزع إعجاب عامة الناس وعليتهم على حد سواء.
وينقسم سعر عروة بن الورد إلى فسمين، يتناول في الأول موضوعات الصعلكة كالغزو والسلاح والرفاق وبث بعض الآراء الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، ويعالج في الثاني موضوعات تقليدية عرفها الشعر العربي القديم كالمديح والهجاء والفخر والرثاء، ويجنح الشاعر في كثير من أشعاره إلى شكل المقطوعات على عادة الشعراء الصعاليك، ويتصف شعره بالواقعية والصدق في تصوير حياته وبيئته، وديوان عروة بن الورد الذي نعيد تحقيقه بالاعتماد على مخطوطة جامعة ليبتسج الوحيدة المعروفة، ومخطوطة منتهى الطلب والمقابلة على كثير من كتب التراث المتنوعة هو من صنعه ابن السكيت الذي سيكون مدار حديثنا أيضًا في مقدمة هذا الكتاب.
