فقد استطاع المؤلف في هذه الدراسة أن يبين كيف كان لدى العلماء العرب منهج علمي واضح راسخ الأصول قائم على احترام الرواية والدقة في النقل والأمانة العلمية والنقد الداخلي والخارجي للنصوص، مع شرح مستفيض للأساليب النقدية التي كانوا يتبعونها وحدود ذلك النقد، وتبيان لطبيعة البحث العلمي، وتردده بين التخصص والتبسط، وقيام جانب منه على التجربة، ومدى تطوره وتقدم أساليبه على مر العصور، وبالجملة فإن هذا الكتاب لا يقف فحسب عند إظهار صورة المنهج العلمي الذي كان العلماء يعملون بهديه بل يوضح مدى "الروح العلمية" التي كانوا يتمتعون بها.
