يتناول هذا الكتاب مراحل حياة هالة السكاكيني في القدس، منذ الطفولة سنة 1924 حتى نكبة 1948. تشاركنا هالة، عبر الانتقال المتقن بين الخاص والعام، عدة محطات وأحداث اجتماعية وثقافية وسياسية عاشتها في تلك الفترة مع عائلتها، مظهرةً بذلك الحضور الملحوظ لشخصية والدها خليل السكاكيني، وما كان لها من أثر واضح في بنائها الذاتي والمعرفي. ينتقل بنا السرد من ذكرى إلى أُخرى وسط تفصيلات صغيرة ودقيقة للأمكنة وأجواء الحياة في المدينة، وأسماء عائلاتها، ومسارحها، ومدارسها، ومقاهيها، وطقوسها في الاحتفالات بمختلف المواسم في الثلاثينيات والأربعينيات من القرن الماضي، وكأن الكتاب دعوة للقارئ كي يسير مع هالة في شوارع القدس ويستحضرها شعورياً بسلاسة.
