Boulos, jeune avocet libanais, rentre dans son pays juste après l’éclatement de la Première Guerre mondiale. L’intention determinée d’un génocide planifié, puis exécuté par le triumvirat ottoman au pouvoir et publiquement déclaré par Enver Pacha dans la localité d’Aley, a été littéralement rapportée par l’ambassadeur M. Defrance au président du conseil Aristide Briand en date du 19 mai 1916: “Le gouvernement ne pourra regagner sa liberté et son honneur que lorsque l’Empire turc aura été nettoyé des Arméniens et des Libnais. Nous avons détruit les premiers par le glaive, nous détruirons les seconds par la faim.” Aussi, Boulos décide-t-il de s’engager dans la résistance pacifique menée par l’Église maronite, devenant ainsi un témoin-vivant d’une période tragique de l’histoir de Liban.
Dans ce roman, l’auteur relate les événements qui ont déterminé l’avenir du pays et valu au Liban l’extermination de la moitié de sa population ravagée par la famine. En sont indissociable aussi la politique tyrannique de Jamal Pacha le Sanguinaire et le jeu implacable des puissances européennes – à leur tête la France- œuvrant à la réalization de leur propres fins. Une touche romanesque teinte ce récit sans faire entrave à sa véracité.
