كتاب "جامع البيان" أكبر كتاب مفصل من بين كتب القراءات من ناحية الحجم، والمحتوى قد تحول الداني كثيراً من البلاد الإسلامية قبل أن ألف كتابه هذا وإستفاد من كتب القراءات أعظم إستفادة وحصل على علم القراءات بأسانيد صحيحة إلى أئمتها.
وهذا الكتاب الذي قد احتوى روايات أئمة القراءات السبع وأصولهم وفروعهم يظهر بأنه موسوعة علم القراءات الذي هو خلاصة كتب القراءات قبله ومتجمع فيه روايات ومعلومات كثيرة، وقال ابن الجزري في كتاب "جامع البيان في القراءات السبع": يشتمل على نيف وخمسْمائة رواية وطريق عن الأئمة السبع وهو كتاب جليل في هذا العلم لم يؤلف مثله، قيل: إنه جمع فيه كل ما يعلمه في هذا العلم.
قدر ما نعلم أن نسخ هذا الكتاب المخطوطة توجد في ثلاثة مواضيع فقط: النسخة الأولى في مكتبة نور عثمانية بإستانبول والثانية في مكتبة دار الكتب المصرية قسم المخطوطات الرقم 1/ 94 والثالثة في الهند PUBLIC LIBRARY PATNA KHUDA BAKHSH ORIENTAL الرقم 1/ 13، 110.
نعتقد بأن التعرف على الحضارة الإسلامية لا يمكن إلا عن طريق نشر المخطوطات الإسلامية القيمة لأن المباني المنيعة لا يمكن أن تبنى بالأعتدة المتينة إذاً يمكن ان نقول إن إظهار النصوص الصحيحة للكتب النادرة العزيزة خدمة رئيسية من خدمات للعلم، إن هدف هذا البحث المتواضع هو إكساب تأليف مهم في علم القراءات لعالم العلم.
في هذا الموضوع أولاً اتجهنا إلى الحصول على هذه النسخ المخطوطة التي ذكرت فوق، وفي النهاية قد تمكنا من تحقيق الكتاب وتحليله وتقديمه لعالم العلم، وهذه النتيجة قد أنسانا المشقة التي قد لقيناها عند الحصول على النسختين اللتين توجدان في الهند والقاهرة وهتان النسختان كانتا ضروريتين في بحثنا.
أما منهجنا للتحقيق فإن أول هدفنا قد كانت تكوين النص الصحيح، ولذلك قد قررنا أن تكون نصاً قوياً من هذه النسخ الثلاثة المخطوطة التي حصلنا عليها.
عندما لقينا صعوبة في ترجيح الروايات المختلفة بين النسخ وحجنا رواية نسخة إستانبول على غيرها لأننا وجدناها أصح الروايات ولذلك اتخذناها أساساً في التحقيق، وأما رواية النسختين الأخريين فأشرنا إليها في الهوامش وكتبنا أرقام ورقات كل نسخة من النسخ الثلاثة أثناء السطور.
