عندما بدأ الله خلق هذا الكون اختار الرقم سبعة، ليجعل عدد السموات سبعة، وعدد الأراضين سبعة، حتى الذرة التي تعد الوحدة الأساسية للبناء الكوني تتألف من سبع طبقات إلكترونية، ولا يمكن أن تكون أكثر من ذلك، كما أن عدد أيام الأسبوع سبعة، وعدد العلامات الموسيقية سبعة، وعدد ألوان الطيف الضوئي المرئي هو سبعة، فالرقم سبعة يملك دلالات كثيرة في الكون والقرآن وأحاديث المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وقد جاء أبو نصر الهمذاني في هذا الكتاب النادر في بابه فجمع عدة لطائف لهذا الرقم، كما قال في المقدمة: (أعلم أن الخالق البارئ، جلت قدرته، وعلت كلمته، وتوالت آلاؤه، وتتابعت نعماؤه، زين الأشياء السبعة بالأشياء السبعة، ثم زين السبعة بسبعة أخرى ليعلم العالمون أن للأعداد السبع عند مالك الضر والنفع خطرأ عظيماً ومحلاً جسيماً. وقسم كتابه تقسيم بديع شيق، لم يسبقه لهذا التقسيم أي عالم كما قال: (أحببت أن أجمع كتاباً يحتوي على سبعة مجالس في علم معاني هذه الأيام، مرتباً على الأعداد السبع، ليكون تبصرة للمتلمسين، وتذكرة للمقتسمين، وسميته: كتاب "السبعيات في مواعظ البريات".
