وعوامل تسمية الأعلام كثيرة جدًا يصعب حصرها، ولكن حاول بعض المهتمين بدراسة أسماء الأعلام ومنهم: عباس كاظم مراد في كتابه: (أسماء الناس- معانيها وأسباب التسمية بها)، ومجيد طوبيا: (قاموس الأسماء العربية الجميلة)، وشفيق الأرناؤوط: (قاموس الأسماء العربية)- حاولوا جمع هذه العوامل بصورة تقريبية وذكروا منها: العامل الديني: بأن يتم اختيار اسم دال على تدين العائلة، ويكون ذلك بدافع التيمن والبركة، مثل أسماء العبودية لله، وأسماء الأنبياء وأمهاتهم وزوجاتهم وبناتهم، العامل التاريخي والقومي والوطني والفني: بأن يتم اختيار اسم قائد أو زعيم أو نابغة أو فنان شهير إعجابًا به، وأملًا في التشبه به في المستقبل، العامل الذاتي والاجتماعي: بأن يسمى المولود باسم الجد أو الجدة أو الأخ أو الأخت أو صديق عزيز تخليدًا للاسم واعتزازًا بصاحبه، وقد يكون اختيار الاسم وفقًا لحالة الوالد والوالدة عند التسمية، أو وفقًا لحالة الوليد الصحية، أو وفقًا لترتيبه بين إخوته، أو تكون التسمية مبينة لموقف الوالدين من المولود اعتزازًا أو كراهية...، عامل التفاؤل، عامل التدليل والتحبب. وفي هذا القاموس جمع لأعلام الإناث، وتحديدًا في المملكة العربية السعودية مرتبة أبجديًا مقرونة بمعانيها.
