تعتبر الحقبة الممتدّة من سنة 1914 إلى سنة 1920 أهم حقبات تاريخ الشرق الأدنى المعاصر على الإطلاق، إنّها مرحلة التقلبّات الكبرى التي شهدتها تلك المنطقة نتيجةً للحرب العالميّة الأولى ولإنهيار سلطنة بنى عثمان، رُسمت خلالها، عبر إتفاقات دولية ووعود ومؤتمرات ومعاهدات، خارجة الدول التي، في غرب آسيا، ورثت تلك السلطنة.
قضت الحرب على الكيان السياسي والبنية الإقتصادية والإجتماعية لمتصرفية جبل لبنان، وأهلكت المجاعة ثلث سكانها بعد تعرّضها لحصارين، برّي فرضه الأتراك، وبحري قام به الحلفاء.
بعد إنسحاب العثمانيين من بيروت ودمشق، في 30 أيلول 1918، انكبّ اللبنانيّون على التخطيط للمستقبل، برز في صفوفهم وفي صفوف سكان المناطق المحيطة بالمتصرفيّة تياران؛ عمل الأوّل على إنشاء دولة سوريّة كبرى موحّدة تضمّ الولايات السورية السابقة ومنصرفيّة الجبل وسنجق القدس، بينما تشبّث الثاني بإستقلال لبنان عن أيّ كيان سياسي مجاور وبتوسيع حدوده، تزعّم الأوّل الأمير فيصل بن الحسين، والثاني البطريرك الماروني الياس الحويّك، استمرّ الصراع بين التيارين طيلة الحقبة المكرّس لها هذا الكتاب وامتدّ إلى ما بعدها.
ما هيّ جذور هذا الصراع، وهل ساهمت الحرب في تأجيجه؟ كيف تجلّى محليّاً وفي مؤتمر الصلح؟ ما هوّ الدور الذي أدّته فيه كلٌ من فرنسا وبريطانيا والذي أدّته القوى الإقليميّة؟ يحاول هذا الكتاب الإجابة عن هذه التساؤلات.
