تعد الدولة العباسية من أهم الدول التي قامت في التاريخ الإسلامي نظراً لإمتداد تاريخها على مدى ثمانية قرون بدءاً من القرن الثاني الهجري وإلى بداية القرن التاسع الهجري123-922هـ)، شهد خلالها العالم الإسلامي أحداثاً كثيرة تراوحت بين نشاط علمي مميز نتج عنه حركة تأليف وترجمة في شتى العلوم والمعارف.
ورغم كثرة الأعمال التي ألفت عن الفترة العباسية والتي تطرق فيها أصحابها إلى أمور تخص حركة التدوين والنتاج الفكري في مختلف المجالات ومظاهر الحضارة المادية والنظم والأحكام إلا أن المجال لا يزال رحباً وفي حاجة ماسة إلى دراسات أكثر عمقاً.
ونظراً لقلة ما كتب عن رجال الأسرة العباسية في القديم والحديث، وهم الشخصيات التي لم تل الخلافة من الأسرة، فقد تناول في هذا الكتاب سير وتراجم وآثار الأعلام من رجال البيت العباسي بإستثناء من تولى الخلافة منهم لإبراز دورهم العظيم عبر العصور في بناء حضارة الأمة الإسلامية وتاريخها المديد، وما قامت به الأسرة من دور رائد وفاعل بالمشاركة في الحياة العامة على المستوى الديني والعلمي والسياسي والقيادي والفكري والأدبي منذ نشأتها وأثناء مدة الخلافة العباسية، وما بعدها حتى العصر الحديث، كما تناول البحث ذكر أنساب وسلائل البيوتات والقبائل العباسية المعاصرة، وخصص فصلاً أيضاً تحدَث فيه المؤلف عن الممالك والسلطنات والإمارات العباسية التي أسسها العديد من رجال البيت العباسي في مناطق مختلفة من العالم الإسلامي بعد سقوط بغداد.
