نظرت في أعماق عينيه، آلمها أنه ما يزال يعتبرها غريبة عنه بشكل ما، وهي التي صارت تعتبر نفسها جزءاً من نسيج بلاده، وتساءلت في نفسها: ""ألم تكن كلّ السنوات الماضية كافية لتعرفني كما أنا؟ لتعرف كيف أفكر وماذا أريد؟ لماذا ترفض أن أكون جزءاً من هؤلاء الناس الذين احتضنوني منذ لحظات وصولي وما زالوا يفعلون""؟
قالت بلطفها ذاته لتفهمه أنها لن تغادر:
- لو كان الأمر معكوساً أكنت لتتركني وتهرب؟ سنبقى هنا ولن نغادر.
لم تنتظر إجابة على سؤالها، لكنها أرادته أنْ يتفهم موقفها، بأنّها تعتبر نفسها جزءاً من كل هذا الذي يجري، قال بكل خوفه عليها وقد عيل صبره:
- لماذا لا تريدين أن تفهمي أنها الحرب؟
قالت حاسمة الأمر:
- أعرف أنها الحرب، وأعرف أننا إمّا أن نعيش معاً أو نموت معاً."
