يعرض الكتاب الإجهادات المختلفة التي تعد أهم المشكلات التي تواجه التوسع الزراعي في جميع أنحاء العالم وخاصة المناطق الجافة وشبه الجافة، وينعكس آثر هذه الإجهادات على الإنتاج النباتي الذي يعتبر المصدر الرئيسي لغذاء الإنسان. ولقد تزايد اهتمام العلماء خلال العقدين الأخيرين من أجل تحسين صفات المقاومة في المحاصيل المنزرعة تحت ظروف الإجهادات البيئية المختلفة، حيث تبين بصفة عامة أن ما يزيد عن 25% من انتاجية المحاصيل تفقد بشكل أو بآخر بسبب الإجهادات البيئية بأنواعها المختلفة والتي من بينها نقص العناصر، والجفاف، والملوحة، والحرارة... إلأخ.
يضم الكتاب خمسة فصول تناول الفصل الأول الإجهاد البيئي وأنواعه واضراره، وناقش الفصل الثاني التربية لتحمل نقص العناصر الغذائية، والفصل الثالث تعرض للتربية لتحمل الجفاف (نقص الرطوبة) وكذلك التربية لتحمل زيادة الرطوبة الأرضية، والفصل الرابع ألقى الضوء على التربية لتحمل الإجهاد الملحي، ولم يفت المؤلف أن يتكلم عن التربية لتحمل درجات الحرارة المرتفعة والتربية لمقاومة الحرارة المنخفضة لتتم الفائدة والتربية لمقاومة الحرارة المنخفضة لتتم الفائدة المرجوة من الكتاب.
