لا أدري لماذا لم يخطر ببالي أبداً أنني سأكتب عن شقيقي جمال حمدان، وأنه لم يتطرق إلى ذهني أنني سأنعيه أو أرثيه في يوم من الأيام، فقد كان كالطود الشامخ الذي لا يتزعزع، والنهر المتدفق الذي لا ينضب معينه، وكانت حياته كلها عبارة عن كفاح مستمر في سبيل العلم والتنوير بمعناهما الدقيق والعريض، ولم تشوبها شائبة الأطماع أو التهافت، فقد كان ينأى عن الصغائر وعن الدعاية لنفسه، وعلمته ظروف الحياة أن يبتعد عن زخرفها وبهرجها، تاركاً لأعماله - ولأعماله وحدها - أن تتحدث عنه، ومن ثم اختار لنفسه أن يعيش راهباً في محراب الفكر.
لقد غاب عنا جمال حمدان بجسده، ولكنه سيظل حاضراً معنا بروحه وأفكاره وتراثه، ولا نزعم هذه الصفحات نشكل سيرة أو تاريخاً كاملاً لحياة جمال حمدان، ولا ندعى أنها دراسة متعمقة في فكرة أو إنتاجه العلمي الغريز، فهذا أمره متروك للباحثين والعلماء ولجانهم المختلفة، وتلك مهمتهم التي قد تحتاج إلى سنوات طويلة من البحث والاستقصاء، ولكن هذه الصفحات وإن كانت تجمع - بإيجاز - بين هذا وذلك، تعتبر بالأحرى بمثابة ذكريات من النسي المنسي، جاءت كلها عفو الخاطر، أثارتها في نفسي وفاته المأساوية، فتجمعت الأحزان وتورادت السوانح والأفكار، فجاءت هذه الصفحات تعبيراً عنها.
