أصل الكتاب لمفهوم صحافة الأطفال وكشف عن الوظائف التي تقوم بها هذه الصحف وعن الدور الذي يمكن أن تلعبه هذه الوسيلة المهمة في تنشئة الطفل العربي وتثقيفه وتربيته وتعليمه، ليكون عماد الحاضر وأمل المستقبل.
ولأن التاريخ توثيق لمظاهر الحياة المختلفة، فقد تناول الكتاب عرضاً تاريخياً لنشأة صحافة الأطفال في الوطن العربي والوقوف على طبيعة التطور لهذه النشأة، كما قدم الكتاب عرضاً شيقاً لأهم القضايا والموضوعات التي قدمتها صحافة الأطفال، من خلال المحتوى أو المضمون الذي اشتملت عليه بعض هذه الصحف.
أما من ناحية الشكل، فقد تناول الكتاب أهم القوالب التحريرية (صحفية أو أدبية) التي تستخدمها صحافة الأطفال في تقديم مادتها، إلى جانب العناصر الإخراجية التي تستخدمها صحافة الأطفال في إبراز مادتها الصحفية، وكذلك الإعلان الصحفي الذي يتميز بطبيعة خاصة في صحف الأطفال، من حيث قيمته وأهميته وأنواعه وقدرته على توظيف اللون والصورة في جذب انتباه الأطفال إلى الإعلان.
