يعتبر هذا الكتاب "موسوعة الخيول" أحد أجمل وأشمل الكتب التي نشرت عن الخيول على الإطلاق، وذلك لأنه يقدم للقارئ العربي معلومات هامة وجديدة عن أكثر من ثمانين سلالة من سلالات الخيول في العالم، هذا بالإضافة إلى تدوينه لحقائق مذهلة، تدور حول عمليات تهجين السلالات المختلفة والتي تجري بغرض إكساب بعض الخيول خصائص معينة نادرة، مع الاحتفاظ بالخصوصية والمميزات الأساسية التي ينفرد بها كل نوع.
وإلى جانب ذلك ينفرد هذا الكتاب باشتماله على معلومات قيمة عن منافسات ركوب الخيل، والسباقات، ورعاية الخيول والمحافظة عليها، بدءاً في إطعامها، ورعايتها وانتهاءً بتأسيسها، وضمان سلامتها الإسطبلات. كما ويقدم هذا الكتاب سرداً مطولاً ومفصلاً لمراحل نمو الخيول ولتسلسل مراحل تطورها عبر الزمن، ألوانها، حجمها، قوتها، بنيتها، حبها للإنسان وعلاقتها به، مساعدتها له منذ القدم وحتى الآن.
كل ذلك تمّ جمعه وصياغته في هذه الموسوعة بأسلوب سهل مبسط، مدعم بالرسوم الفوتوغرافية والصور الملونة المفصلة، والموزعة على صفحات مزدوجة توضح دراسة خاصة مصحوبة بصور غالباً ما تشمل تفاصيل الرأس والمؤخرة، ومع رسوم توضيحية وصور تشرح كيفية استخدام السلالة المعينة في الماضي، وطرق استخدامها في الحاضر.
ومما تجدر إشارته أن مؤلف هذا الكتاب وهو "ألوين هارتلي إدوارد" كان من أشهر الصحفيين والكتاب المهتمين بالفروسية، وبعلاقة الإنسان بالجواد، وتدريب الخيول والفرسان، ويقول المؤلف عن نفسه أنه حينما بلغ عمره الواحد والعشرين عاماً كان يعتقد أنه لا يعرف كل شيء عن الخيول وأنه كان يستطيع ركوب كل حيوان يمشي على أربع، ولكن فيما بعد أيقن أنه لا يعرف شيئاً. ولذلك قرر أن ينذر بقية عمره لاكتساب المزيد من المعرفة والتعلم.
لم يسبق لأيّ كتاب عن الخيول أن ألقي الضوء بكل هذا الوضوح على الفوارق بين السلالات المختلفة، ووفر مثل هذه المعلومات الغزيرة عن مختلف الأنواع. أكثر من أربعمائة صورة ملونة ترسم أمام القارئ صورة حية لكل سلالة، مع التوضيح والمقارنة بين الحجم، القوة، الألوان، والبنية في كل سلالة. إضافة إلى ذلك، يشتمل الكتاب على معلومات قيمة عن منافسات ركوب الخيل، السباقات، وكل أشكال رعاية الخيول والمحافظة عليها.
