جاء ميلاد الأمير تيمور جوركاني في عام ( 736 ه / 1320 م ) في مدينة كش، حاضرة ولاية سمرقند ، حيث دان حكم بلاد ما وراء النهر ، لأبناء جغتاي الإبن الثاني لجنكيز خان – إمبراطور المغول – وقد اشتهرت بلاد ما وراء النهر بشهرة عريضة لسنوات عديدة ، على الرغم من أنها معزولة وحبيسة من كافة الجهات .
ووسط زخم الأحداث الساخنة صعد نجم تيمورلنك في بلاد ما وراء النهر ، ونجح في تكوين إمبراطورية واسعة الأطراف ، أحدثت متغيرات في الموازين السياسية العالمية ، وأثّرت فتوحاته لإيران وكثير من مدن آسيا تأثير خلال ( أعوام 771 – 807 ه / 1370 – 1404 م ) ، لأنه أوقف الزحف العثماني تجاه أوروبا ، وأسهم بدور فاعل في إنقاذ أوروبا المسيحية من السقوط والإضمحلال .
امتدت أمبراطورية تيمور إلى بعض المدن الساحلية المطلة على البحر المتوسط ، وأراضي الشام ( سورية ) ، بين النهرين ، إيران ، تركستان ، منغوليا ، الهند ، ومدن أخرى في آسيا الوسطى وروسيا .
حكم تيمورلنك بلاد ما وراء النهر وإيران ، وغيرها من الممالك الأخرى 36 عاماً ، وكانت عاصمة حكومته في إيران واستمرت الإمبراطورية مئة وأربعين سنة .
