إن اختيار مرجع لإحدى المواد في الدراسات العليا للإرشاد النفسي أو العلاج النفسي يضع أمامنا مشكلة، فهناك العديد من المراجع في مجال العلاج النفسي قد تكون ذات فائدة للدارس، ولكن لايوجد أحدها احتياجات مرجع شامل، وقد يشعر بعض المحاضرين بألا حاجة لمثل هذا المرجع في هذه المرحلة من الدراسة، لكن لا يزال هناك الكثير من الجوانب في الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي التي لم يتم تداولها أو ليست في متناول يد الدارس ليستفيد منها، والكتاب الحالي محاولة من المؤلف- في جزئين- لمواجهة هذه الحاجة، وقصد المؤلف ألا يكون هذا المرجع عن كيفية العمل أو كيفية الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي، فالتأكيد هنا على النظرية وفلسفة المدخل إلى الإرشاد، بدلاً من التركيز على الوسائل، التي تناولتها مراجع عديدة، وقد كان المؤلف اختص كتابه الأول بالمبادئ العامة، ومشكلات التطبيق في الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي، ولقد شعر المؤلف بحاجة طلاب الدراسات العليا إلى مرجع يتضمن النظريات والمداخل المختلفة للإرشاد والعلاج النفسي، ولذا قدم كتابه الثاني عن "نظرية الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي".
ونظراً لأهمية الكتابين، فقد رأى المعرب أن يعرضهما معربين في كتاب واحد، وسمح لنفسه أن يقوم بدور المحرر، فأعاد ترتيب الفصول لتتماشى مع هذا الإدماج.. فأعد الكتاب في خمسة أبواب تتضمن عشرين فصلاً على النحو التالي: (أولاً: الباب الأول: ("مدخل" يتضمن الإرشاد النفسي والعلاج النفسي، أخلاقيات المهنة، القيم والعلاج النفسي، العوامل الثقافية في العلاج النفسي)، ثانياً: الباب الثاني: "العلاقة العلاجية"، ثالثاً: الباب الثالث: "نظريات الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي"، رابعاً: الباب الرابع: "العلاج النفسي الخياري"، وأخيراً خامساً: الباب الخامس: "خاتمة").
