تعد رحلة بنيامين من أبكر مدونات الرحلات العالمية التي اتصفت، إضافة إلى سبقها، بشمولها لمناطق كان لا يعرف عنها في أوروبا سوى الحكايات والأساطير. وقد استغرقت حوالي ثماني سنوات، كانت حافلة بالأحداث الجسام في الأقطار التي غطتها الرحلة، وقد تقصت أخبار الطوائف الدينية، المتواجدة في طريقها، وتحدثت عن الفرق اليهودية: السامرة والبكائين وحركة داوود بن الروحي، من المعروف بأن الرحلة وضعت في أوروبا التي كانت تشهد اضطهاداً وتمييزاً ضد اليهود، وتوجهت إلى بلاد فيها تجمعات يهودية تعيش بأمان وبحبوحة، بل أن بعضها على حال من الرفاهية، مما يدل على أن الرحلة صيغت لتكون خارطة طريق صالحة للإتباع من قبل كل يهودي في أوروبا يضطر للهجرة. وجعلت عدة مدن، ومعظمها عربية إسلامية، هدفاً ليقصدوه، أن نص الرحلة، الذي كتب في ظل ثقافة يهودية غربية، يشير إلى أن اليهود عاشوا أزهى أيامهم مع الدولة العربية الإسلامية، وأنهم في ظلها شهدوا عزاً واحتراماً لم يعرفوه في مكان آخر، وأن حالة الشتات، كانت ثقافة ثابتة في نهج الجماعات اليهودية المنتشرة في العالم، التي اعتبرت أن سر قوتها هو توزعها بين المجتمعات، وأن حيويتها بانتشارها الواسع، بعكس ما تحاول الحركة الصهيونية الحديثة أثباته، واليوم إذ نعيد نشر رحلة بنيامين، بترجمة عزرا حداد، لكن بتحقيق جديد يعرض وجهة نظر أخرى، جهدنا لتكون موضوعية وعلمية، خاصة فيما يتعلق بنطاق الجغرافية التوراتية للرحلة.
