يمكننا اعتبار هذا الكتاب مساهمة في تعريف الفينومنولوجيا في العالم العربي. وهو، علاوة على هذه المساهمة الضرورية، يرصد التحولات التي طرأت على هذا الحقل من المعرفة، ويحاول، من خلال نقد مبادئ الفينومنولوجيا التقليدية، إعادة تعريفها مجدداً بطريقة تأويلية. ولهذه الغاية يسعى المؤلف إلى دراسة الوجود والوعي والإدراك والحرية والجسد والفن، واللغة في علاقتها بالفكر، واللسان في علاقته بالكلام، وغير ذلك من الموضوعات لينشئ مدماكاً جديداً في هذا الميدان الذي ارتبط بإدموند هوسرل تقليدياً. والمعروف أن هوسرل أكبّ على البحث عن الأساس الأول الذي قامت عليه المعارف في الفكر الغربي، وعن ماهية الظواهر، بينما استغرق هايدغر في البحث عن معنى الكينونة بعدما رفض الجانب الميتافيزيقي في فينومنولوجيا هوسرل؛ وهكذا ظهر الفصل التقليدي بين المعرفة والوجود.
وفي هذا الكتاب يصحح المؤلف غلطاً وقع فيه كثير من الباحثين حين جعلوا مرلو-بونتي تابعاً لسارتر، فأكد أن لمرلو-بونتي اتجاهاً فلسفياً أكاديمياً خالصاً، خلافاً لسارتر الذي كلن لكتاباته الأدبية أثر مهم في نشر أفكاره الفلسفية.
