يعتبر علم تصميم واجهة المستخدم من العلوم المهمة التي ربطت علم الأعمال وعلم التكنولوجيا إلى جانب علم الإنسان إلى درجة كبير.
رغم أن مفهوم تصميم واجهة المستخدم لدى البعض مفهوم مرتبط بالوسيلة البديهية للتفاعل مع الأنظمة ولا يحتاج لخبرات متقدمة، فقط في معرفة ما هو المطلوب من النظام وعمل شاشات تمكن المستخدم من تنفيذ هذه المهام.
لكن المفهوم الحقيقي لتصميم واجهة المستخدم يتمثل في أنه علم يتطلب من القائم عليه خبرات بعدة مجالات أولها الإنسان وكافة خصائصه البشرية العامة ومن ثم الخصائص التي ينفرد فيها بعض البشر ذو إحتياجات خاصة أو أعمار معينة أو خبرات وإمكانيات عالية.
ثانياً على مصمم واجهة المستخدم أن يكون ملم إلى درجة كبيرة بعلم وبيئة الأعمال حتى يتمكن من خلالها إستيعاب المتطلبات التي تسعى واجهة المستخدم لتحقيقها وأيضاً حتى يستطيع الإبتكار والإبداع في تصميم واجهة المستخدم بدرجة تفوق توقع المستخدم نفسه الذي بالغالب لا يملك خبرة كافية لما يمكن أن يتم تحقيقه من خلال الواجهة، ثالثاً علم التكنولوجيا وخاصة تكنولوجيا المعلومات، حتى يتمكن من توظيف الأجهزة والتقنيات والبرمجيات التي تزيد من فاعلية إستخدام الواجهة.
وبهذا تتضح الصورة أن مصمم واجهة المستخدم يجب أن يكون ذو كفاءة عالية في هذه المجالات الثلاثة إلى جانب عدم إهمال الجانب الفني الذي يجب أن يستوعبه حتى يستطيع إظهار الواجهات بشكل فني عالي المستوى ومتوازن من حيث الجاذبية والفعالية.
يقدم الكتاب الكثير من المعلومات عن هذه المهارات المطلوبة موزعة على سبع فصول ويختم الكتاب بمجموعة من الأسئلة الشاملة مع أجوبتها حتى يستطيع الطالب تقييم نفسه ومعرفة درجة إستيعابه.
قبل أن نسرد بشكل مختصر أهم مكونات الفصول السبعة يجب أن ننوه أن الطالب الذي يريد الإستيعاب إلى أقصى حد عليه أن يستوعب ويعيش دور وإحساس مصمم واجهة المستخدم ويحاول أن يكسب نفسه هذه المهارات من وقت مبكر.
كثير من واجهات المستخدم التي سنتحدث عنها قد تكون معروفة لدى الأغلبية نتيجة أن الحياة أصبحت مجموعة مترابطة من الأنظمة بما فيها الإنترنت نفسها.
