منذ مدة طويلة وكلمة "الماسونية" معروفة فى اللغة الفرنسية ولها شهرة كبيرة، ونفس الكلمة تقريباً تستخدم فى اللغة الفارسية ولكنها تكتب (Franc-ma,com) ونفس هذه الكلمة تستخدم أحياناً فى الفارسية مع قليل من التغيير، والمعنى الأصلى لهذا المصطلح يمكن تفسيره بصور مختلفة; فعلى سبيل المثال فإن الحرفى أو البناء الذى يعمل بشكل حر ويستخدم فى عمله الحجارة المنحوتة أدوات حرفية مثل: القدوم والشاكوش والبلطة والمسطرين يطلق عليه اسم " فريماسون" نظراً لأن مثل هذه الحجارة المنحوتة تُسمى فى اللغة الإنجليزية "فرى ستون" (freestoon)، كما أنه من المحتمل أن الهؤلاء الحرفيين قد أطلق عليهم اسم " الأحرار" (Free) نظرأ لأنه فى عصر حكم الأنظمة الإقطاعية فى أوروبا كان هؤلاء الحرفيون أحراراً فى عملهم يسافرون إلى أى مكان فى بلادهم يكون فى حاجة إلى خدماتهم ويعملون هناك.
