تقدم هذه الطبعة كتاب تاريخ الحكماء وهو مختصر لكتاب القفطي "إخبار الحكماء". اختصره الزونى. وجعل عنوان مختصره: " المنتخبات الملتقطات من كتاب إخبار العلماء بأخبار الحكماء".
والطبعة تشتمل على قسمين: يضم القسم الأول نص الكتاب بتحقيق دكتور يوليوس ليبرت مع تمهيده ومقدمته المترجمتين إلى اللغة العربية. وفهارسه، ولم يضف إليه إلا التصوبيات التى أجراها أحمد باشا زكى على النص العربي بعد الفراغ من تحقيقه، وقد وردت بالطبعة الأولى قائمة لها ملحقة بالجزء المدون باللغة الالمانية.
أما القسم الثانى فيشتمل على دراسة ما جاء بالكتاب وبالهوامش التى وضعها ليبرت عن النص، ويضم الحديث عن الكتاب ودراسات وتعليقات للمستشرفين الذين اهتموا بما ورد به من تراجم لعلماء عرب وغير العرب من يونانيين وهنود وفرس، وما أضافوه إلى ما كتبه المحقق من تعليقات، وصوبوا بعضها وبذلك يعد ما كتبوه إضافة لتحقيق نص الكتاب، وما حول النص، ويبين هذا الاهتمام بأحد كتب التراث العربي الذى أسهم فى تعريف الغرب بالتراث العربي والإسلامى، وبتراث اليونان وتراث الشرق القديم الذى فقدت بعض أصوله، ولم يبق إلا الترجمات العربية له، ويبين أيضا كيف أفاد الغرب منه، وكيف أسهم المسلمون فى الحضارة الانسانية، وينتهى القسم بتقديم تعريف بالأعلام الذين ورد ذكرهم بمقدمة المحقق ومقدمة معد هذه الطبعة.
