علي محمد الصلابي عالم دين ومؤرّخ ليبي، حصل على درجة الإجازة العالمية (الليسانس) من كلية الدعوة وأصول الدين من جامعة المدينة المنورة بتقدير ممتاز وكان الأول على دفعته عام 1992 / 1993م، وكان اسم بحث تخرجه (صفات رب البرية على منهج العقيدة السلفية).
حصل على الماجستير من جامعة أم درمان الإسلامية كلية أصول الدين قسم التفسير وعلوم القرآن عام 1996 م.
ومنها حصل على الدكتوراه في الدراسات الإسلامية بمؤلفه "فقه التمكين في القرآن الكريم" عام 1999.
سعى للقيام بأدوار سياسية في ليبيا، منها اتخاذه موقف المعارض لنظام القذافي ، حيث سُجن لأكثر من سبع سنوات في السجن السياسي، ومن ثم دخل في إخراج السجناء السياسيين عبر مفاوضات مع النظام من خلال سيف الإسلام القذافي، ، ومع بداية الاحتجاجات ضد حكم القذافي مطلع عام 2011 أعلن الصلابي تخليه التام عن سيف الإسلام، وفي وقت لاحق من المواجهات العسكرية بين ثوار 17 فبراير وقوات القذافي استأنف الصلابي اتصالاته مع نظام القذافي من خلاله لقاءاته مع رئيس مخابرات ليبيا في نظام القذافي أبو زيد دوردة، وبرر الصلابي اتصالاته بأنها كانت بدافع حقن الدماء.
وبعد سقوط حكم القذافي في العاصمة طرابلس بفترة وجيزة، قام الصلابي بتصريحات إعلامية حادة وغير مسبوقة طيلة فترة الأزمة الليبية إلى محمود جبريل رئيس المكتب التنفيذي الليبي، .
