انتشر لدينا ولدى بعض البلدان العربية فى الآونة الأخيرة بعض المؤسسات لتدريب الأطفال على مهارات العداد الحسابى, وأثير بعض الجدل حول هذا الموضوع وأهميته ونتائجه, ولكن اليقين أن القصة بدأت مع الأطفال المكفوفين مبكرا, حيث وردت الأداة الحسابية "الأباكوس" إلينا فى القرن الماضى منذ منتصف الستينيات, وإن كانت لم تحظ بالاهتمام ولم يتم التدريب عليها أو استخدامها لشيوع لوحة تيللر الحسابية.
والأباكوس "abacus" هو الاسم الذى أطلقه اليابانيون على العداد الحسابى فى الصين واليابان وبعض الدول الشرقية حيث تفوق شعبيته الخيال ولا يزال يستخدم بنجاح. ولقد تم تعديله ليناسب استخدام المكفوفين.
وهذا الكتاب بمثابة دليل لأولياء الأمور والمتخصصين والتلاميذ, يشرح خطوة بخطوة كيفية استخدام العداد فى إجراء العمليات الحسابية الأساسية: الجمع, الطرح, الضرب, القسمة بالإضافة إلى الكسور, روعى فيه أن يكون الشرح بصورة وافية وأسلوب مبسط دون تعقيد مع البساطة فى العرض والإيضاح, وكثرة الأشكال والرسوم التوضيحية, علاوة على تعدد وتنوع الأمثلة المعينة على الفهم, إلى جانب الوفرة فى التدريبات التطبيقية.
