كان لملك خادمٌ مشؤوم، لا تخرج من فمه قط كلمة طيبة...
عندما رآه الملك من بعيد قال لوزيره: "ها قد جاءت الحنجرة العفنة... لا تسله عن شيء لأنه سينطق بالشؤم... سله فقط عن أخبار كلبي".
تقدّم الخادم وقبّل الأرض تحت قدمي الملك...
فسأله الوزير: "يا مكرب الناس، ما هي أخبار كلب الملك؟".
أجابه الرجل: "لقد مات".
فسأله الوزير: "بأيّ سبب".
قال الرجل: "نفقّ جمل الملك الأبيض وأكل من لحمِهِ فمات".
قال الوزير: "ولكن كيف نفقّ الجمل؟".
قال الرجل: "ماتت أُمُّ الملك فحملوها عليه إلى المقبرة فنفقّ".
فقطّع قلب الملك وسأل: "لكن ما الذي جرى؟... لها بأيِّ مرضٍ ماتت؟"...
أجاب الخادم ودموعه تفيضُ بغزارة: "فارقَتْ الملكة الدنيا فقتلها الحزن عليها".
فصاح الملك وهو ينتف لحيته: "ولكن كيف ماتت امرأتي؟".
قال الخادم: "لقد حصد الجدري أبناءك وبناتك فلم تحتمل الصدمة وماتت".
وسأل الملك وهو يضرب رأسه: "هذا يعني أنه لم يبق أثر للقصر".
أجاب الرجل: "عندما كنت هناك كانوا يبذرون الحب في قصرك، أمّا بعد ذلك فلا أعلم".
وقد تبيّن بعد ذلك أنّ كل ما قاله الخادم المشؤوم كذبّ اختلقه ليكرب الناس.
