تدور رواية "الموت فى فينيسيا" حول بطلها "جوستاف فون أشبناخ" بعد أن بلغ الخمسين وأصبح فى طليعة كتاب عصره، وحاز حب قرائه وتقديرهم داخل بلاده وخارجها، كما استحق اللحق الأسمى من أمير الدولة على المستوى الأجتماعى، ومثل تراجيديات شكسبير الكبرى، تتشكل هذه الرواية من خمسة فصل وتنتهى بمأساة اليمة لبطاها صاحب المنزلة الرفيعة، الذى صار يقاسى الوحدة والملل بعد الزواج ابنته الوحيدة، وحرمانه من الابن الذى تمناه، بسبب وفاة زوجتة، مما جعله يقع فى حب غلام ليس لجماله مثيل، قابله فى فينيسيا، التى ارتحل إليها طلبا للراحة، فمضى يتأمل فيه عبقرية الخلق وأسرار الجمال حتى فقد القدرة على مغادرة فينيسيا بعد أن وقعت فى قبضة الكوليرا، أنها نموذج فرد فى بنائها الفنى ولغتها وأسلوبها وموضوعها الأنسانى الذى جعلها تستحق عن جدارة شهرها العالمية.
