"نهض" أنطونيو خوسيه بوليفار بير ودانيو" على مهل واقترب من الحيوان الميت وتأثر لرؤية الطلق وقد مزقه. فلم يكن صدره غير جرح ضخم وقد خرج من ظهره حطام من أحشائه ورئتيه. لقد كانت أكبر أيضاً من كان قد ظن عندما رآها للمرة الأولى. وعلى الرغم من نحولها فقد كانت بهيمة رائعة، وآية من الجمال، ورائعة من روائع السّحر يستحيل نسخها حتى في الخيال.
ومسح عليها العجوز ناسياً ألم قدمه الجريحة وبكى من الخجل شاعراً بأنه خسيس ومحتقر وغير منتصر بأي شكل في هذه المعركة. وإذ غشّت الدموع والمطر عينيه فقد دفع جسم الحيوان إلى ضفة النهر فجرفته المياه إلى أعماق الغابة نحو أراض لم يقدّر قط أن دنسها الرجل الأبيض، نحو ملتقى النهر بنهر "الأمازون"، نحو المجاري السريعة الفوّارة حيث ستتكفل خناجر الحجارة بتشقيقه جاعلة إياه يستعصي إلى الأبد على متناول المؤذين المناكيد.
ثم ألقى بحنق بالبندقية ونظر إليها... من غير مجد، بهيمة معدنية ملعونة من جميع المخلوقات. نزع "أنطونيو بوليفار" وجبة أسنانه ولفّها في منديله من غير أن يتوقف من لون الرجل الأبيض المسؤول عن المأساة، والمحافظ والمنتجين عن الذهب، وجميع الذين يدنسون بكارة "أمازونياً"، وقطع غصناً غليظاً بضربة من ساطوره فتوكأ عليه وتوجه نحو "آل ايد بلير"، نحو كوخه ورواياته التي تحكي عن الحب بكلمات هي من الجمال بحيث تنسيه في بعض الأحيان بربرية الناس". على الرغم من تلك المسمة من الفكاهة التي فعلت بها مجريات الأحداث مع ذلك العجوز الذي كان يقرأ الروايات الغرامية، إلا أنه في لحظة من اللحظات استطاع هذا العجوز تكريس موقفه الأخير لترجمة هذا الكم الهائل من المعاناة التي كابدها النشيليون من الرجل الأبيض.
